IGP, South-West Governors To Meet Over Amotekun

The Inspector General Of Police, Mohammed Adamu, South will meet with the six governors of the South-West geopolitical zone to discuss the modalities for Operation Amotekun, the zone’s security outfit.
This was disclosed after a meeting between Adamu and Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Wednesday.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Governor Makinde announced that the IGP agreed to meet with the governors to review all lingering operational issues concerning the security outfit.
“Everybody is aware of the issue with Amotekun, so we deliberated, we had an agreement in principle to have the governors of the South-West to meet with him (IG) to review the situation.
“We are trying to build a new country where the rule of law is supreme, so everybody should be law-abiding, ensure that they don’t do anything that would create lawlessness,” the governor said.
When asked about the current status of the security outfit, Governor Makinde said: “It is a work in progress, we are trying to operationalise it and in doing that, all the relevant stakeholders would have to align.”
The planned meeting comes after the South-West governors held a meeting with the Federal Government, which was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Abubakar Malami, Attorney General of the Federation, to resolve issues concerning the legality of the security outfit.
It was held in response to a purported statement credited to Malami saying that the creation of Operation Amotekun was illegal.
The AGF, however, said he was misquoted.
On the local government crisis in his state, the governor said he had secured Adamu’s commitment to ensuring peace in the state, adding that his administration did not want lawlessness.
Governor Makinde said the state government would obey court judgments on the LG crisis, adding that Adamu assured him that the police would similarly comply with the court order restraining the ousted LG chairmen from returning to office.
