A member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Olusoji Adetunji, has congratulated the people of Osun State on the celebration of the state’s 34th anniversary, calling for renewed unity and collective efforts towards political stability, peace, and sustainable development.
Rep. Adetunji, who represents Odootin /Ifelodun/ Boripe federal constituency described the milestone as a moment of thanksgiving and sober reflection. “It feels like yesterday when our dear state was carved out of old Oyo, today, the baby is already 34. We must return all glory to Almighty God who has kept us this far and who continues to be the source of joy to all indigenes of Osun, both at home and in the diaspora,” he said.
The lawmaker commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for what he described as “unprecedented strides” in transforming the state despite certain challenges bedeviling the state. He singled out improvements in road infrastructure, welfare packages and initiatives for pensioners , health insurance schemes, improved security and other critical sectors as proof of the governor’s commitment to delivering dividends of democracy.
On the lingering local government crisis, Adetunji applauded the governor’s peace-driven approach, which according to him, has averted chaos and sustained harmony across the state. However, he faulted the federal government over what he termed the unjust withholding of local government funds, saying such action undermines the much-touted principle of financial autonomy.
“It is disappointing that while the federal government preaches financial autonomy for local governments, it simultaneously allows practices that contradict this principle. True democracy and development at the grassroots cannot thrive under such conditions,” he lamented.
The member of the House Appropriations also called on public office holders across the state to embrace inclusiveness in governance, stressing that leadership must be people-oriented and focused on uplifting all citizens, regardless of social or economic status.
“Osun people are known for their resilience, resourcefulness, and diligence. Together, we can build a state where everyone rich or poor, enjoys the benefits of development,” Adetunji added.
As Osun marks its 34th year of existence, he urged residents to strengthen the spirit of unity and cooperation that has defined the state since its creation, assuring that with collective efforts, Osun would continue to soar higher not only in Southwest but throughout the federation.
