Messi Sees Red As Athletico Bilbao Beat Barcelona To Win Spanish Super Cup
Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, got his first career red card on Sunday in the Super Cup final against Athletico Bilbao, after punching an opponent.
Bilbao stunned error-prone Barcelona to win the domestic trophy 3-2 in extra time.
In a match filled with drama, Messi was sent off after he punched an opposing player close to the end of the encounter.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner played a pass and took a swing at Asier Villalibre as the striker came in front of him.
The referee then showed him a straight red card after reviewing the incident on the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
It was the first red card the Argentine has ever received as a Catalan player, coming in his 753rd appearance for the club.
Antoine Griezmann had scored twice for the Ronald Koeman’s side, but Oscar de Marcos and Villalibre equalized for the Basques.
In extratime, Iniaki Williams got the winner before Messi was red carded.
