Mainz 05 Coach Hails Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi
Mainz 05 head coach Achim Beierlorzer was full of praise for Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi and the rest of the team, for the hard earn draw against Cologne on Sunday.
Mainz 05 came back from two goals down to rescue a point at the Reins Energie Stadion in their first Bundesliga game since the campaign was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mainz fell behind courtesy of strikes from Mark Uth and Florian Kainz, but Achim Beierlorzer’s men rallied back to snatched a point from the game, thanks to a goal from their Nigeria import Awoniyi.
He said: “We did a great job – and Cologne played well also. We played to requirements and played a really good game of football with a fair result.
“I think 2-2 is well deserved. I can only praise the team’s morale after recovering from going 2-0 down and in the end, we could have even won the match,” he said.
Since joining the club last summer was, Awoniyi has made just one start but has played eight games in total.
He will be hoping for better opportunities in the team after his sterling performance at Cologne.
Mainz remains in 15th position with 26 points from 27 matches and FC Koln maintained their place in the top half of the table with 33 points from the same number of games.
