Gov. Ganduje Slashes Salaries Of Political Appointees

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has slashed salaries of political office holders by 50 percent.
The governor said the move is due to shortfalls in the federation account and the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which he said has been adversely affected by the economic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ganduje, in a statement issued by his chief press secretary, Abba Anwar, said political office holders in Kano will receive half salary with immediate effect from May 2020.
The governor said the state has found it necessary to slash the salaries of all political office holders by half, as a result of the shortfall in the price of oil at the global market, which has affected global economy.
He explained that, “There is also a serious set back in the IGR, due to COVID-19 pandemic challenges. “Whereas almost all companies in the state are no longer in operation due to lockdown.
“So also other areas where the state gets revenue are no longer operational. This also is another reason for giving political office holders half salary,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.
He added that the political office holders affected by the reduction are; the governor and his deputy, all commissioners, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants among others.
At the Local Government level, those affected are Local Government chairmen, deputy chairmen, elected councillors, supervisory councillors, advisers and secretaries of LGs.
