COVID-19: Three Out Of Five Deaths In Nigeria Are Persons Above 50 – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said three out of every five deaths linked to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Nigeria are associated with persons who are over 50 years of age.
Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director-General of the NCDC, revealed this at the press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja on Thursday.
Ihekweazu explained that although young people are the major driver of the virus, majority of the fatalities recorded are with elderly persons.
He called on Nigerians to show more responsibility and care towards the elderly citizens, especially younger people who live with or come in constant contact with people from the age of 50 and above.
He said: “Statistics show the major drivers of COVID-19 spread are the younger populations, however people with underlying medical conditions and the elderly are most vulnerable.
“The transmission of COVID-19 is dynamic. It’s obvious that transmission among people within the age of 20 years and 40 years is the ones driving the spread of the virus but those that bear the burden are people within 50 years and above. Out of every five death recorded, three were people 50 years and above.
“We must take responsibility to keep them safe.”
