Court Grants Journalist Agba Jalingo Bail
Justice Sule Shuaibu of the Federal High Court, Calabar, on Thursday granted Agba Jalingo, a journalist on trial for treason, bail.
He had spent 174 days in detention in both police cell and Calabar prison.
Jalingo, who is the publisher of CrossRiverWatch, was arrested on August 22, 2019, over a report alleging that Cross River State governor, Ben Ayade, diverted N500 million belonging to the state.
He had been denied bail twice by another judge, Simon Amobeda, who recently withdrew from the case after a secret recording where he (Amobeda) allegedly made some “biased” remarks against the accused was leaked to the press.
Shuaibu ruled that Jalingo’s sureties must deposit a refundable sum of N700,000 to the court registry.
