City Beat United In Carabao Cup Semi-Final First Leg
Defending champions, Manchester City, produced a domineering display at the Old Trafford home of neighbours, Manchester United, winning 3-1 in the first leg of the Carabao Cup Semi-Final on Tuesday.
Pep Guardiola’s side stunned the home fans with three first-half goals, and the tally could have increased in the course of the second half.
Midfielder Bernardo Silva gave The Citizens the lead in the 17th minute with a superb strike from the edge of the box that arrowed into the top corner of the net.
Riyad Mahrez made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute when he ran on to Bernardo’s pass and rounded goalkeeper David de Gea.
It was 3-0 in the 38th minute after Kevin De Bruyne twisted Phil Jones inside out and saw his shot saved by De Gea, but was deflected in off Andreas Pereira.
United’s limp resistance and lack of threat saw them booed off by some supporters at the break but they at least showed some resolve when they emerged for the second half.
The home side responded with a Marcus Rashford strike in the 70th minute.
The second leg will be played on January 29 at City’s Etihad Stadium.
